As a very frequent traveller, I’ve developed an obsession about luggage. I have spent many, many hours perusing luggage websites and stores, and many more thinking about the requirements for the perfect bag. Like Jason on an epic journey looking for the golden fleece, I’m not at all sure that I’ll find this perfection, or even if it exists. Nevertheless, the struggle is real, and ongoing. Here are some of my must-have requirements for the perfect bag:
- The wheels must roll really smoothly, and there should be 4 of them.
- It should be expandable, to accommodate a little shopping from your travels.
- In non-expanded form, it should fit in the overhead storage on full-size jets (that means external dimensions not exceeding 22 x 16 x 9.5 inches) and the shape should maximise internal volume within those limits… No wedge shapes!)
- All the closures to the main compartment should be lockable
- It should not have more internal separations than necessary, since this reduces packing volume and options.
- The handle should be the two-upright format, allowing another bag to slide over the handle without spinning around.
- It should be tough and protect the contents well (a bag goes through hell when checked, external damage is inevitable)
- It should not use up volume or weight on too many external pockets.
- It should look stylish, and be distinguishable from other bags (this is where most “good” bags fall down, too much plain black!)
- There should be an add-a-bag hook or strap.
I have yet to find a bag that meets all 10 of the above requirements, even among the premier brands. In future posts, I’ll be publishing my opinion of how the bags sold today stack up.
In the meantime, I’d love to hear your thoughts and comments on my requirements, plus any of your own.
Keep calm and carry on (your bag)!
